Gypsy – A Musical Fable
Many, including critic Ben Brantley of the New York Times, have speculated that Gypsy, an American musical, is the best of all time. It chronicles the aspirations and struggles of a determined and strong mom who wants to see her two children succeed in show business. Gypsy is mostly based on Gypsy Rose Lee’s 1957 biography, Gypsy: Memoirs of America’s Most Celebrated Stripper, about her life as a famous striptease performer. Gypsy Rose Lee’s mother, Rose, gained recognition as the iconic “Stage Mother” and a place in the literary and theatrical canons thanks to the memoir and musical. Songs from the musical, such as “Some People,” “Let Me Entertain You,” “Rose’s Turn,” and the jaw-dropping “Everything’s Coming Up Roses,” have become staples in the canon of musical theatre.
